Workshops

An Undertow workshop will guide its participants in sharing their own unique experiences and view of the world. We will use a range of creative exercises to identify common themes within the group, and encourage participants to share their work during the session.

We want to get everyone writing and we’re often disarmed by what it is that people have to say.

A typical workshop lasts two hours with a break in the middle. We are also able to offer a lunchbreak speed workshop or an immersive full day of writing as part of a team building initiative.

It’s entirely up to you how much of this time is used for the individual and how much is done as a whole group or several groups. Our workshops can be conducted as standalone opportunities or as a course over several weeks which may go hand in hand with mentoring and the production of a chapbook.

‘The value of this work that Kat is doing is clear from the frontline, when people leave sessions they are changed, there is a looseness in their bodies. And with the production of this book we will be able to connect with a wider audience who will be able to relate to and better understand the everyday lives of asylum seekers and refugees in the UK.’’ - Migrants Organise

Mentoring

Undertow offers the unique opportunity to pair emerging writers with established writers who can provide personalised feedback and guidance. Through these one-to-one relationships, participants are empowered to strengthen their skills and uncover the heart of their stories. Even for the most accomplished writers, it can be challenging to achieve the objectivity needed to evaluate their work—a second pair of eyes can be invaluable.

Mentoring is particularly beneficial for building confidence, especially for those who may feel hesitant to share their work in a group setting. It enables in-depth discussions on specifics, helping to refine and elevate a piece to a polished final edit.

For writers who have been working in isolation and have a substantial body of work to share, we also offer manuscript consultation services to provide comprehensive feedback and support.

“Over the time that we have worked together I have seen Kat make strong connections with our service users, bringing people together and finding ways to support them. The work which you will soon see for yourselves that was facilitated by Kat has not only illuminated the stories and spirit of these people but also given them a sense of pride and confidence.”

Chapbooks

At Undertow we believe that the practice of writing is hugely worthwhile in and of itself even if it is only read by its writer. But there is also something to be said for the achievement of having your work printed in a book you can hold. And it’s a pleasure to share these books.

So for those who’d like to work towards a point of polishing and sharing their work, we are also able to publish chapbooks. Chapbooks can be the product of a series of workshops made by collating and editing the work made in sessions. They can also be put together exclusively through a collection of mentoring relationships. Many come about as the result of a bit of both.

As well as chapbooks, we’ve worked with businesses who’ve chosen to produce a series of podcast stories. Whichever way is best for you, we are here to support you as editors.
